Export to Video

You can record a video of the functionality of a Vertex program. By recording a video you can, for example, create an installation or usage guide or communicate easily with Vertex Helpdesk.

When recording, the program takes pictures of a specified area of the screen at a specified frame rate. The pictures are saved in a temporary folder inside the folder where Vertex is running (user folder). When the recording is finished, a video is created from the saved pictures, after which the pictures and the temporary folder are deleted. In case the program is closed before finishing the recording, the pictures are kept in the temporary folder. The next time the recording function is started, you can choose to create a video from the pictures in the temporary folder. This ensures that a video can be recorded even if the program crashes while recording.

Customize recording settings and record a video as follows:

  1. Select Export Export to Video.
  2. Edit the settings in the Screen Recording dialog box.
  3. Select Start recording.
  4. When you want to stop recording, press Shift+F11. More options...Less options...
    • (OR) Select Export Export to Video again.
Note: You can start recording more easily by adding the Export to Video function to the quick access toolbar located at the top of the window. On the Export to Video button, select the context-sensitive function Add to Quick Access Toolbar.

Dialog Box Options

Displays to be recorded
You can record either only the primary display or all displays.
Note: Recording several displays requires more performance from the computer and may slow down Vertex.
Windows to be recorded
You can record either the whole screen or only the region where the Vertex main window is located. If you record the whole screen, the operating system's task bar is also included in the video, for example, and if the Vertex program's window is not the size of the full screen, everything else displayed on the screen is recorded too. If you only record the region where the Vertex main window is located, everything displayed on that region is recorded.
Note: The video's area limits are only set at the beginning of recording, which means that the area does not change if you move the Vertex program's window.
Video quality
You can choose the quality of the video. The higher the quality, the more storage capacity the video will require. The quality does not affect performance or storage use while recording, but only the end result of the created video. Select one of the following:
  • Best quality, largest file
  • High quality, larger file
  • Default
  • Lower quality, smaller file
Video file finishing
You can choose the level of encoding for the finishing of the video file. When more time is used in finishing the video, the resulting video will require less storage capacity. The finishing does not affect performance or storage use while recording, but only the end result of the created video.
Select one of the following:
  • Faster finish, larger file
  • Default
  • Slower finish, smaller file
This feature is significant when shooting long videos:
  • Finishing a long video takes more time than finishing a short one, but the waiting time can be shortened by speeding up the finishing. In this case, the final video file is larger.
  • The file size of a long video is larger than that of a short one, and for example, the size limit of an e-mail attachment may be reached. You can reduce the file size by slowing down the finishing.
Frame rate (fps)
You can choose the video's frame rate, or how many pictures are saved in the video in a second. You can choose 4, 12 or 24 pictures per second.
Frame rate (fps) Description
4 Is enough for a slow presentation and produces a smaller video.
12 Is enough for a normal presentation.
24 Good quality motion tracking, produces a larger video.
Note: A higher frame rate will require more performance from the computer and may slow down Vertex.
Video file name
You can choose the path and the name of the video file. You can also choose whether to save the video in .mp4 or .avi video file format.
Play video after recording
If Play video after recording is selected, the video will be played automatically using the operating system’s default program for the video file format in question after the video is saved.
Note: An external helper tool, FFmpeg, is used in creating the video file. More information: https://vertexcad.com/links/ffmpeg
